Here's something remarkable: looking at a finished porcelain flower, hardly anyone would guess it began as a lump of gray, rough, shapeless clay. Between those two states lies a journey of many days, sometimes weeks - with an artisan's hands, two firings, and no shortage of anxious waiting. This is the story of that journey.
Chapter 1: The First Handful Of Clay
Every Kim Ky Ceramic creation begins with clay. The material is carefully selected and kneaded until it reaches just the right consistency - not so dry that it cracks, not so wet that it collapses. It sounds simple, but this step is decisive: only clay that feels "right in the hand" will listen to the artisan.
All materials, including clay and glazes, are made entirely in Vietnam, and every product is handcrafted.
Chapter 2: Giving Clay Its Form
This is the moment clay begins to gain a soul. For porcelain flowers, the artisan shapes each petal, each stamen, each leaf by hand - no molds, every petal a small decision made by the hand. For relief paintings, clay is built up layer by layer directly onto the base, stacking to create depth and lifelike raised forms.
No two petals are exactly alike. It's these subtle differences that create a natural quality machines struggle to imitate.
Chapter 3: Patiently Waiting For The Clay To Dry
Once the form is complete, the piece is left to dry slowly. This is the quiet pause in the journey: it can't be rushed. Dry too fast and the clay cracks; dry unevenly and the piece warps. Potters understand that sometimes the most important step is simply… waiting.
Chapter 4: The First Fire
The dried piece goes into the kiln for its first firing (bisque firing). At high temperature, clay transforms completely - from soft and fragile to hard and durable. This gives the piece a strong "skeleton," ready to receive color.
Chapter 5: Color Finds Its Voice
Then comes the glaze. A layer is applied to the surface - it might be a vivid glossy glaze, a nostalgic crackle glaze, or an ever-shifting flambé glaze. At this stage, the glaze color before firing often looks dull and nothing like the final result. The artisan must rely on experience to "picture" what the fire is about to create.
Chapter 6: The Second Fire - The Defining Moment
The glaze firing is the most nerve-wracking. The glaze melts, bonds tightly to the ceramic body, and becomes a glossy glass-like layer. Only now does the true color appear. With glazes like flambé, the result even depends on the "temperament" of the fire itself, which is why every piece is one of a kind.
Chapter 7: A Masterpiece Is Born
When the kiln cools and its door opens, the story reaches its beautiful conclusion: a glazed porcelain flower, a relief painting full of depth. Each piece is carefully inspected before reaching the customer, so that every creation is not only beautiful, but built to last.
